A concussion is a brain injury that exists when the force of a head trauma shakes the brain inside the skull causing a temporary alteration of the brain''s normal function. Symptoms of concussion can range from mild to severe and include, but aren''t limited to: dizziness, memory loss, brief loss of consciousness, confusion, blurred or double vision, ringing in the ears, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. In many cases, symptoms of concussion subside after a day or so.
Concussion treatment varies depending on the severity of the injury. In all cases of brain injury, it is important to closely monitor the injured person for 24 hours following the injury. While symptoms of concussion often appear right away, severe symptoms can develop anywhere in the 24 hours post accident. Warning signs to look for include: seizure; unrelenting confusion or memory loss; vomiting that continues after the first two hours; severe headache or stiff neck that persists or worsens after the first four hours; significant changes to the pupils; abnormally deep sleep or difficulty waking up.
Immediate concussion treatment includes checking the injured person for any of the aforementioned symptoms. If there is loss of consciousness, it is imperative to seek medical help right away. If there has been no loss of consciousness - which is often the case with mild concussions - home treatment methods are acceptable.
Initially, if the head wound is bleeding, apply firm pressure over the wound with a clean cloth for 15 minutes. Medical help is necessary if the cut is deep or if the injury penetrated the skull. Next, check the rest of the body for injuries that may have not been noticed in the commotion. Ice or cold packs will reduce the swelling of any bumps on the head or elsewhere, and acetaminophen (Tylenol) will help relieve a mild headache or pain from the concussion.
If there is vomiting involved with the concussion, treatment begins one hour after the last episode of vomiting with 4 fl oz of clear water every 20 minutes for one hour. Slowly maintain your diet, but avoid eating your normal diet until all symptoms are gone for 12 to 48 hours.
The best concussion treatment is rest. After a concussion, it is crucial to allow ample time to heal. It is best to avoid any kind of situation during which another head trauma may occur. Recurring concussions could lead to irreparable damage or even death.
