In 1989, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Permax (pergolide) for the management of Parkinson's disease and Restless Leg Syndrome symptoms. Unfortunately, it wasn't until years later—in 2003—that several reports of serious Permax side effects surfaced causing drug maker Eli Lilly and Co. to update the product labeling to include heart valve damage risks. By 2006, more reports of Permax adverse events led the FDA to issue a “black-box” warning, which ultimately resulted in a Permax recall a year later.
If you or someone you love has suffered harm as a result of Permax side effects, it is important to consult with an attorney experienced in pharmaceutical litigation. You may be eligible to seek compensation for your losses including medical costs, pain and mental anguish, and more. Permax Linked to Heart Valve Damage
In 2003, the FDA began receiving reports of patients who experienced serious Permax side effects, including heart valve damage. Three years later, the drug regulatory agency confirmed that Permax was indeed linked to cardiac valvulopathy, a life-threatening condition that causes the mitral, atrial, and/or tricuspid heart valves to leak.
So far, 14 Parkinson's patients have had to undergo heart valve replacement surgery after using Permax. Eli Lilly pulled the drug off the market because of the grave health risks associated with its use.
