If you have been treated with Permax, a lawyer's advice may be advisable in light of the two recent nationwide recalls of this drug. As of August 30, 2007, Permax (pergolide mesylate) will no longer be sold in Canada. This recall follows the March 29, 2007 recall of Permax in the United States. Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its counterpart in Canada, Health Canada, have concluded that the risk of developing heart valve damage from Permax outweighs the benefits of taking the drug.

Permax for Parkinson's and RLS
Permax was approved for Parkinson's disease in the U.S. in 1989 and in Canada in 1991. Approximately 500,000 people in the U.S. have been treated with Permax since then. Permax has also been used to treat RLS (restless leg syndrome), a neurological disorder characterized by a troublesome, irresistible urge to move the legs when at rest.
Heart Valve Damage
Although Permax appears to have been effective at relieving the tremors of Parkinson's disease and the disturbing symptoms of RLS, the link between this drug and heart valve damage is serious and significant. The heart valve damage is similar to that induced by the diet drugs fenfluramin and fen-phen. Studies published in January 2007 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine stated that individuals who have been treated with Permax for at least six months are at the greatest risk of the heart valve damage.
RLS and Children
The August 2007 issue of the medical journal Pediatrics includes a study reporting that 2% of the children aged 8–17 in a panel of 10,523 families in the U.S. and the U.K. had the symptoms of RLS. If your child has been treated with or continues to be treated for RLS with Permax, talk to a lawyer today to discuss your legal rights and options.
Other Treatment Options
According to the FDA's Healthcare Advisory issued in March, treatment with Permax for you or your child, whether for Parkinson's diseases or RLS, should be discontinued. Ask your physician about alternative treatments. A cardiac evaluation and an echocardiogram can help identify heart valve damage.
