Permax (pergolide), approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1989, is a widely prescribed drug used to manage the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). However, concerns over the safety of Permax were raised in 2003 after several reports found the drug was linked to heart valve damage. In March 2007, drug manufacturer Eli Lilly pulled Permax off the market as a result of the serious health risks.
If you or a loved one has suffered heart valve damage you believe was caused by Permax, you may be eligible to recover your damages including pain and anguish, medical expenses, lost earning capacity, and more. Permax “Black-Box” Warning and Recall
In February 2003, the FDA issued a Permax safety alert after a number of patients developed cardiac valvulopathy—damage in the atrial, mitral, or tricuspid heart valves, which causes them to leak and can lead to serious, life-threatening injury . While the safety alert did claim there was still no conclusive evidence linking Permax and heart valve damage, the association was significant enough for the FDA to order a labeling change.
Then in 2006, more reports of serious heart valve damage linked to Permax caused the FDA to issue the strongest safety label—a “black-box” warning—alerting doctors and patients of the grave risks. So far, over a dozen Parkinson's patients have undergone heart valve replacement as a result of taking Permax.
Since then, the FDA and Eli Lilly have determined that the risks linked to the use of Permax far outweigh the benefits and the drug has been recalled.
