A study published in the February 2006 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine found that maternal use of the antidepressant Paxil increased the risk—by as much as six times—of a birth defect known as persistent pulmonary hypertension, or PPHN. Babies born with PPHN have difficulty circulating oxygen through their bodies because of constricted blood vessels in the heart and lungs. The condition causes babies to become very sick, and in some cases, intensive medical treatment is not enough to save a baby’s life.
If your baby was born with PPHN and you think Paxil is to blame, contact us today. We will put you in touch with an attorney who can explain your legal options.
FDA Alert
After evaluating the NEJM study, the Food and Drug Administration issued an alert in July 2006 warning of the risk of PPHN to babies whose mothers took Paxil during pregnancy. According to the alert and the study findings, women taking Paxil after the 20th week of pregnancy are six times more likely to give birth to a baby with PPHN than women who took no antidepressant at all during pregnancy.
PPHN is a life-threatening birth defect. Even with prompt diagnosis and treatment, a baby may be unable to get enough oxygen to the vital organs. This can result in:
Babies who survive, however, often suffer lifelong damage such as:
Paxil and PPHN
Paxil has been linked to various potentially fatal birth defects. If your baby was born with PPHN and Paxil was used during pregnancy, you and your family may be able to hold Paxil’s maker liable for your damages and suffering. Depending on the circumstances of your case, you may be able to recover compensation for your medical costs and mental anguish, among other things.
