Paxil Overdose

Paxil overdose can occur when a person takes an unsafe dose of this antidepressant SSRI medication. Paxil was approved by the FDA in 1993 to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post traumatic stress syndrome. GlaxoSmithKline is the pharmaceutical giant responsible for Paxil production.

Since the approval of this drug, more than 350 cases of accidental or deliberate Paxil overdose have been reported worldwide. Of these reported Paxil overdose cases, about fifty patients died as a result. In seventeen cases the patient died from a Paxil overdose that involved only the use of Paxil and eight deaths were caused by Paxil overdose and the ingestion of other drugs or alcohol or in the presence of compounding comorbid disorders.

In patients who have survived a Paxil overdose, the strongest dose that was ingested was 2,000 milligrams of Paxil. Paxil overdose can occur in pediatric patients at much lower doses. Typical dosages doctors prescribe their patients range from ten to forty milligrams. Proper dosage is also case-specific therefore it is very important for patients to take Paxil exactly how it is prescribed in order to avoid a dangerous Paxil overdose.

Paxil overdose can occur at different levels of Paxil ingestion for different people. The most common symptoms of a Paxil overdose can include dizziness, sleepiness (somnolence), nausea, tremors, confusion, rapid heart beat, vomiting and coma.

Other Paxil overdose symptoms that have been reported include: severe muscle twisting or contractions, pupil dilation, loss of consciousness, rapid heart beat, convulsions, serious muscle and liver diseases, and aggressive or violent behaviors.

Paxil side effects can include, but are by no means limited to, the following symptoms: mania, the onset or worsening of depression, anxiety, agitation, compulsions and obsessions, and akathisia. Akathisia is the internal experience of intense agitation and discomfort that drives a person to lose impulse control. Akathisia is thought to be a precursor to the hostile and violent aggression that is caused by serious Paxil side effects.
