drug_recall paxilPaxil lawsuits have been filed for some time now, with patients claiming the antidepressant can cause addiction and severe and sometimes life-threatening instances of drug withdrawals. The popular drug makes billions of dollars a year for maker GlaxoSmithKline, with high amounts of marketing and advertisements featuring high profile spokespersons. As the focus on Paxil safety and increasing amounts of Paxil lawsuits are being filed, SSRI Citizen consumer advocacy group announced antidepressants like Paxil are "Unsafe At Any Dose" in August 2004 as part of a national awareness campaign.
The group has planned a demonstration for November 2004 against Terry Bradshaw, a Paxil marketing spokesmen targeting mental health in the workplace supported by an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline that allows Bradshaw to travel throughout the country promoting the use of Paxil. In June 2004, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer filed suit against GlaxoSmithKline, alleging the company engaged in repeated and persistent fraud by concealing and failing to disclose critical information about Paxil''s safety and efficacy to doctors regarding its use amongst pediatric patients. Other states are talking about making similar moves against the company.
There are more than 5,000 individual Paxil lawsuits in the U.S. filed, as well as over 2,500 Paxil lawsuits filed in Britain, alleging Paxil addiction and withdrawals. Eliot Spitzer''s move against GlaxoSmithKline only intensified the scrutiny on Paxil and other antidepressant drugs. Though a high number of Paxil lawsuits have already been filed, experts estimate an even larger number of Paxil lawsuits have not been filed yet since patients that have not yet tried to get off of Paxil may not realize their addiction and withdrawal.
Not only has the use of Paxil among pediatric children been a focus, but also the use of Paxil among pregnant women. As of now, there is the absence of an actual controlled study showing the effects of Paxil on a developing baby, though some evidence has showed dangers can occur more often when Paxil is taken in later stages of the pregnancy. Health Canada warned in August 2004 that Paxil during late pregnancy might be putting babies at risk after international and Canadian reports indicated some newborns, especially if the mother used a newer antidepressant like Paxil during the final three months of pregnancy, developed complication at birth requiring prolonged hospitalization, breathing support and tube feeding.
The Health Canada warning is yet another blow to an already controversial Paxil and is predicted to lead to filings of more Paxil lawsuits. The reported symptoms in the babies included feeding and/or breathing difficulties, seizures, muscle rigidity, jitters and constant crying. Since there is also a lack of information regarding the safety of breastfeeding while taking Paxil, many women and obstetricians are frustrated with the lack of guidelines available to make informed decisions. Eliot Spitzer commented on his filing of the Paxil lawsuit by saying GlaxoSmithKline concealed critically important scientific studies on Paxil, which "impaired doctors'' ability to make the appropriate prescribing decision for their patients and may have jeopardized their health and safety."
As powerful drug companies enjoying multi-billion dollar profit generators like Paxil try to increase drug revenues even more, medical experts, regulators and patients worry that the information they receive is filtered to allow the most maximum amount of returns instead of keeping patients safe.
