Paxil ® is a medication prescribed to treat patients suffering from depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Following the release of a 2006 study, testing infants whose mothers took Paxil ® and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) during their pregnancy, the FDA issued warnings against the use of Paxil ® in pregnant patients. The study revealed that infants born to mothers who took SSRIs during pregnancy are six times more likely to suffer from birth injuries, including:

  • Club Foot
  • Limb reduction
  • Neural tube defects
  • Cardiovascular malformations
  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN): Deadly condition in which the blood is not able to flow normally through the heart and lungs
  • Omphalocele: A condition that occurs when a fetus' abdomen fails to close around the base of his or her umbilical cord, letting abdominal organs such as the intestines protrude into the cord's base
  • Congenital malformations: Physical abnormalities in the structure of body parts resulting from defects or damage to a developing fetus

Do you or someone you love have an infant who has suffered birth defects as a result of Paxil ® or another SSRL? If so, contact us immediately to schedule a private consultation.
