Gulf Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

The Deepwater Horizon exploded off the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010; this has been marked as one of the most devastating oil spills in U.S. history. The economic impact continues to add up as the affected industries continue to lose money.

The Obama Administration filed a civil complaint in December 2010, naming BP and eight other companies financially responsible for the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010. The complaint accuses the companies of the following:

Deepwater Horizon Explosion

The explosion is said to have occurred as a result of high pressure in the well. The methane reacted with the pressure creating an blowout and fire on the rig. While most of the workers survived the explosion and were brought to safety, some were killed or severely injured.

Crews were unsuccessful in extinguishing the fire. The fire finally went out itself when the Deepwater Horizon oilrig sank into the Gulf a few days later.

What went wrong on the Deepwater Horizon?

Deepwater Horizon oil rig was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and operated by Transocean. Transocean was under contract with BP for the lease of the well. Workers were drilling a well to explore further oil supplies in the petroleum rich region. An investigation revealed that the company had not been doing regular audits and nine companies have been accused of being negligent.

The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon has caused billions of dollars in damage. The civil complaint, reportedly, seeks roughly $21 billion in damages for the BP Gulf oil spill.
