An explosion aboard a deep-water drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico has caused an enormous oil spill that has killed 11 people, injured 17 others and severely damaged marine life in the contaminated waters for years to come. Known as the Deepwater Horizon, the massive oilrig has been leaking an estimated 25,000 U.S. barrels (210,000 gallons) of crude oil each day, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Although the rig is owned by Transocean Ltd., currently, the Deepwater Horizon is primarily leased by BP Exploration & Production. Other major petroleum corporations associated with this rig include Cameron International, Halliburton and Anadarko.
BP, along with the tireless work of the Coast Guard, the U.S. Military, the Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies, are working around the clock in an effort to stop, contain and clean the oil pollution. However, cleanup efforts may take months. What's even scarier is the knowledge that this region will be seriously devastated for decades to come. In fact, the marine life still has not fully recovered from the 1978 oil spill off the Normany Coast in France.
This fact is tragic on both an environmental and an economical level, as the damage has dealt a serious blow to the fishing and tourism industries that many of the Gulf states including Louisiana and Florida depend on. Those who have sustained job loss, income loss, or any financial loss as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill may have a legal claim against BP and other affiliated parties.
The early attempts to contain and clean the spill have failed. Initially, BP tried to place a dome over the leak, which would contain the leak and pump oil to storage facilities on the surface. Despite the fact that this method has been proven, it had never been tested in waters as deep as where the Deepwater Horizon lay. However, when leaking gas mixed with cold ocean waters, crystals formed and blocked the piping of the dome, causing it to be an ineffective solution. The use of dispersants to break up oil on the water's surface has also proven to be a risky solution, as enough exposure to the dispersants used by BP can cause serious health damage to rescue workers.
While innovators, engineers and scientists are scrambling to find a new cleanup method that could mitigate the snowballing damage, oil is continuing to leak, and many more individuals will likely sustain serious financial loss as a result of BP's negligence.
