Abdominal pain, breast tenderness, changes in menstrual cycle and weight fluctuation are among the most common side effects of Ocella birth control. However, theses Ocella side effects are not what has sparked controversy surrounding use of this fourth generation birth control pill. Similar to Yaz and Yasmin, Ocella is an oral contraceptive that combines progestin and estrogen to prevent pregnancy.
The progestin component, drospirenone, has been linked to several severe side effects, including:
High blood pressure
Numbness
Confusion
Vision problems
Migraines
Breast lumps
Depression
Blood clots
Stroke
Heart attack
Pulmonary embolism
Death
Ocella, and its popular brand name sisters, Yasmin and Yaz, are the only birth control pills marketed in the United States that contain drospirenone. Marketed as fourth generation oral contraceptives, these birth control pills are said to be the most dangerous of all birth control pills.
Due to the chemical similarity to Yaz birth control and Yasmin, many health insurance companies have replaced Yaz with Ocella on their lists of medications that they cover. Also, many pharmacies have automatically switched to the generic pill, most likely as a way to save the consumer money.
While many women have reported that theyve noticed no difference between the two drugs, some have reported uncomfortable side effects after switching to Ocella including nausea, acne break outs, and weight gain.
Other side effects have included break through bleeding, heavier periods, and pain from increased potassium levels. Its important to have your potassium level checked before taking this medication as well as while youre taking it, as an increase in potassium can have dire consequences.
If you or someone you love has experienced a side effects of the birth control pill, you may qualify to pursue compensation for your losses by filing a lawsuit against the makers/ manufacturers of the pill. All drug manufacturers have an obligation to ensure their products are safe for American consumption. If they fail to do so and you are injured, they can be held reliable.
