Ocella is a birth control pill, composed of drospirenone, a type of progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, a type of estrogen, used in most birth control pills. It is taken daily by mouth and has 24 active pills (pills with hormones) and 4 placebos (pills to take during menstruation that don’t have any hormones). It is chemically similar and marketed as the generic version of Yaz or Yasmin, a popular birth control pill.
Ocella is prescribed to women for the prevention of pregnancy. It has also been approved to treat mild to moderate acne as well as treat for the symptoms associated with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Young women are the target market for this pill, which recently came on the market as a generic alternative to Yaz/Yasmin. As such, many health insurance companies are replacing Yaz with Ocella on their lists of medications that they cover.
As with all birth control pills, there are side effects. Ocella shares many of the same mild side effects with other pills, including:
However, the addition of the progestin drospirenone increases the risk of the following:
Drospirenone is linked to an increase in potassium that causes abnormal heart rhythms. Any disruption to the normal functioning of the heart can have serious consequences, including blood clots in the heart, stroke, heart attack, or sudden death.
Ocella, and its popular brand name sisters, Yasmin and Yaz birth control, are the only birth control pills marketed in the United States that contain this type of progestin. While all birth control pills carry some risk of stroke, blood clots, etc., the drospirenone in these pills is directly tied to heart problems and sudden death. Therefore, you and your doctor should carefully weigh the costs and benefits of this medication when deciding on a birth control pill that is right for you.
If you’ve experienced a side effect of Ocella, Yaz or Yasmin, your injuries should not go without recourse. For more information about your legal rights, contact our Ocella lawyers today. We may be able to help you recover compensation for your injuries and losses.
