Ocella is marketed as a generic form of Yaz birth control. Composed of a type of progestin known as drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol a type of estrogen, Ocella is becoming a replacement for the popular birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin. It is meant to be taken orally every day.

How Does Ocella Work?

Like all birth control pills, Ocella contains hormones that prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation and changing the mucus linings of the cervix and uterus. It basically tricks a woman’s reproductive system into believing it’s already pregnant.

Ocella vs. Yaz or Yasmin

Ocella birth control is chemically similar and marketed as the generic version of Yaz and Yasmin, two popular birth control pills that also contain drospirenone. Though many women have reported seeing no difference between the two, some have reported increased nausea, acne breakouts and weight gain in switching from Yaz or Yasmin to Ocella.

Ocella Side Effects

As with all birth control pills, there are mild side effects. Ocella shares many of the same mild side effects with other pills, including:

• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Vaginal discharge
• Weight changes
• Breast pain or tenderness
• Bleeding between periods
• Nausea

However, the addition of the progestin component drospirenone increases the risk of life-threatening health risks including:

• Blood clots
• Stroke

• Deep vein thrombosis
• Death

Other serious health risks associated to the oral birth control pill include:

• High blood pressure
• Numbness
• Confusion
• Vision problems
• Migraines
• Breast lumps
• Depression

New Progestin Increases Risk of Death

Drospirenone is linked to an increase in potassium that causes abnormal heart rhythms. Any disruption to the normal functioning of the heart can have serious consequences, including blood clots in the heart, stroke, heart attack, or sudden death.

Ocella, and its popular brand name sisters, Yasmin and Yaz, are the only birth control pills marketed in the United States that contain this type of progestin. While all birth control pills carry some risk of stroke, blood clots, etc., the drospirenone in these pills is directly tied to heart problems and sudden death.

It is important for any woman who is considering starting a Ocella regimen to fully understand the potential health risks.
