NuvaRing® weight gain is a phenomenon that has been reported by many women. In fact, the Full Prescribing Information issued with this product mentions "weight gain" as a NuvaRing® side effect in three separate sections. Healthcare providers have noted that one of the most frequent questions they hear from women who are considering using the NuvaRing® birth control method, "Does the NuvaRing® make you gain weight?"

Weight Gain: One of the Most Common NuvaRing® Side Effects

As noted on both the prescribing information and the NuvaRing® website, published by the manufacture of NuvaRing, Organon USA, weight gain is one of the most common side effects reported by NuvaRing® users, along with:

• vaginal infections and irritation
• vaginal secretions
• headache, and
• nausea

Weight Gain Is One of NuvaRing's Adverse Reactions

The Prescribing Information for NuvaRing® includes a section entitled "Adverse Reactions" which states that in a number of clinical trials studying about 2,500 NuvaRing® users, adverse events were reported by 5 to 14 percent of the women, with weight gain being one of the most commonly reported adverse events, along with:

• vaginitis
• upper respiratory tract infection
• sinusitis, and
• nausea

The NuvaRing® and Vulvar Vestibulitis

Another very problematic disorder that has been linked to the NuvaRing® is vulvar vestibulitis, a disease caused by severe irritation of the vestibular glands of the vulva. The symptoms and signs of vulvar vestibulitis are:

• redness at the vestibule (the entrance to the vagina)
• irritation, burning, stinging, or raw sensation within the vestibular area
• severe pain with pressure (e.g., from tampon use, sexual intercourse, bike riding)
• the urge to urinate suddenly or frequently

The Mechanism behind NuvaRing® Weight Gain

It is possible that some women experience NuvaRing® weight gain side effects because of the hormonal effects of this contraceptive. The NuvaRing® is a "combination" hormonal contraceptive, releasing both a progestin and a form of estrogen into the wearer's bloodstream.

Although these hormones are intended to prevent the maturation of eggs that could become the basis for a pregnancy, they may also cause some women to gain weight. Conversely, other women with different hormonal profiles (or other factors) may experience weight loss when they use a NuvaRing.
