Many NuvaRing® symptoms have been reported since this method of birth control was approved by the FDA in 2001. Similar to all hormone-based contraceptives, NuvaRing® gives a user a higher-than-normal level of estrogen and progestin in order to prevent pregnancy. This very mechanism is also the cause of several adverse NuvaRing® symptoms. A few of the most common NuvaRing® symptoms are:

• breast tenderness
• cramps
• headaches
• vaginal dryness

Symptoms after Stopping NuvaRing® Use

When a woman decides that she'll no longer use the NuvaRing® birth control method — whether to switch to another method, or because she no longer wants or needs to prevent pregnancy, or for medical reasons — she may experience unpleasant symptoms after stopping NuvaRing® use, such as:

• spotting
• irregular bleeding
• too-heavy menstrual flow
• other changes in her menstrual cycle

However, there are far more serious potential NuvaRing® side effects that have been the basis of lawsuits, including:

• myocardial infarction heart attack
• stroke (a potentially fatal cerebrovascular event)
• thrombosis (blood clot) in a leg or lung

How Long Do NuvaRing® Symptoms Last?

The less troubling NuvaRing® symptoms do not last longer than a day or two. In contrast, reported NuvaRing® symptoms such as weight gain, depression and increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease or diabetes may last for weeks, months or years.

It's impossible to determine exactly how long a specific NuvaRing® symptom will last. Any woman who is experiencing an adverse symptom from this vaginal ring contraceptive should contact her healthcare provider right away.

NuvaRing® Allergy Symptoms

On the official NuvaRing® website, the manufacturer of NuvaRing® (Organon USA) provides a long list entitled, "Who Should Not Use NuvaRing." One of the groups of women advised to avoid NuvaRing® use is those who have an allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the components of NuvaRing®. This warning is somewhat vague, since not many women are (a) aware of being allergic to components such as progestin and estrogen, and (b) aware of the complete list of the components of NuvaRing.

Indeed, allergy symptoms reported in conjunction with NuvaRing® use — such as rash, itchy skin, and vision changes — were experienced by women who were not expecting any allergy or other side effects from use of this contraceptive.

Moreover, NuvaRing® allergy symptoms have been reported by men (the partners of women wearing a NuvaRing®), when the chemical in NuvaRing® apparently gave them a rash or irritation.
