Patients who use NuvaRing® may be at an increased risk of stroke. A stroke is a very serious medical event that can result in death or permanent, severe disability. Many women who have used NuvaRing® have not been made aware of this drug's stroke potential.
There are two basic types of stroke:
About 80 percent of strokes are ischemic-type. Either type can kill an individual. Any third-generation contraceptive (including the NuvaRing® birth control method) contains a combination of hormones that can increase a user's chance of developing a NuvaRing® blood clot. Such clots often occur in the legs, but they are also seen in the arms, abdomen and other sites. If a clot travels to the lungs or brain, it can be fatal.
Many women use contraceptives in the U.S. — for example, in a 12-month period from late 2005 to late 2006, more than seven and a half million prescriptions for third-generation contraceptives were filled. With the doubled risk of stroke, hundreds more women are endangered by these contraceptives.
