A NuvaRing recall has been proposed by the families of several NuvaRing users whose deaths have been linked to a NuvaRing heart attack, stroke or blood clot. In 2007, the consumer advocacy group "Public Citizen" also petitioned the FDA to recall and ban all 3rd-generation contraceptives (such as the NuvaRing) because these contraceptives are estimated to double the risks of stroke and blood clots compared to 2nd-generation contraceptives such as the Pill.
A NuvaRing recall in 2009 is still possible. Although 3rd-generation contraceptives were designed with the intention of making contraceptives with fewer risks to their users, they may have just resulted in different risks. An explanation is in order:
The side effects of 1st-generation oral contraceptives (such as fluid retention, headaches, unwanted hair growth and weight gain) were decreased among users of the 2nd-generation products, but researchers continued to work toward obtaining the safest and most side effect-free contraceptive possible. The third generation of contraceptives was introduced in the early 1990s.
At least three independent studies have shown that the 3rd-generation contraceptives present twice the risk of producing a stroke among its users. These studies go as far back as 1995, when a McGill University-led study revealed that 3rd-generation contraceptives are linked to a high risk of the formation of blood clots in the legs — that is, DVT (NuvaRing deep vein thrombosis), a condition that can result in a death (when blood clots break free and travel through the bloodstream to the heart or the lungs).
It has been known for several decades that women taking the Pill have a risk of developing blood clots that is roughly four times that of women not on the Pill. To have an even higher risk of blood clot formation from a contraceptive such as the NuvaRing is an unsettling possibility for many women.
