Pulmonary Embolism Outcomes

A NuvaRing® pulmonary embolism is a sudden blockage (i.e., embolism) of the blood's flow to one or both lungs (i.e., the pulmonary system). If a blood clot is large enough to stop the flow of blood to a lung, the potential outcomes include:

• shock
• abnormal heart rhythms
• heart damage
• myocardial infarction (death of lung tissue)
• pleural effusion (a build-up of fluid outside the lungs)
• pulmonary hypertension
• sudden death from cardiac arrest — which usually occurs within 30 minutes of the onset of symptoms

Pulmonary Embolism from Deep Vein Thrombosis

In most cases, a pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot forms in the leg and travels to the lungs. A clot in a deep vein (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT) can easily lead to a pulmonary embolism. The use of this contraceptive is also linked to an increased risk of NuvaRing® deep vein thrombosis.

Symptoms of NuvaRing® Pulmonary Embolism

Any woman who is using a NuvaRing® — and the other individuals in her environment — should be aware of the symptoms and signs of a pulmonary embolism. Any set of these is cause for medical attention:

• sudden shortness of breath
• sharp chest pain that feels worse during an inhalation or a cough
• a cough that brings up pink and/or foamy mucus
• feeling anxious or "on edge"
• excessive sweating
• feeling faint or lightheaded
• fast heart rate / palpitations
