Since it hit the U.S. market in 2002, there have been several problems related to NuvaRing® use. While some of the problems are minor, there have also been several reports of serious side effects associated with the vaginal ring.

NuvaRing® Problems: Side Effects

The NuvaRing® has been linked to a series of side effects, ranging from minor to severe. Some of the most common NuvaRing® side effects include:

• Weight gain, bloating
• Breakthrough bleeding
• Increased cramping and back aches
• Migraine headaches
• Chronic exhaustion
• Vaginal discharge
• Vaginal burning
• Increased risk of infection
• Decreased sex drive

NuvaRing: Serious Health Risks

While most of the listed side effects are tolerable and common among other birth control methods, there are some serious, potentially fatal health risk associated with NuvaRing, including:

• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Gallbladder disease
• Liver damage
• Blood clots in the legs, lungs or chest
• Increased risk of developing breast cancer

Because of the serious problems and potential health risks associated with the NuvaRing®, it is important for women who are using the NuvaRing®, or who are considering switching to the NuvaRing, to be aware of the potential dangers and their symptoms. If you are using the NuvaRing® and you begin to experience any side effects (no matter how mild they may seem), you should see your doctor immediately.

Following is a short list of symptoms associated with problems caused by the NuvaRing:

• Severe allergic reactions (symptoms may include hives, rash, severe itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth, lips or tongue)
• Breast discharge or unusual lumps
• Severe pain or swelling in the stomach
• Chest pain, heaviness
• Numbness in the legs or arms
• Severe vaginal bleeding
• Swelling of the fingers, arms or legs
• Vaginal irritation, discharge or tenderness

This is only a short list of symptoms that are often associated with problems caused by the NuvaRing®. If you experience any of the listed symptoms, or any other unusual signs, it is important to seek medical attention immediately to prevent further health complications.

NuvaRing® Problems: Hormones

The majority of NuvaRing® users will never experience a problem with the vaginal ring. However, because some women are sensitive to hormones, some women may experience one or more side effects shortly after the first use.

NuvaRing® Problems and Men

Most men will not feel the NuvaRing® during intercourse. However, out of the small percentage of men who said they have felt the NuvaRing® during intercourse, only a few said they had a problem with it.

If you are using the NuvaRing® and have experienced any problems with it, you should discontinue use immediately, seek medical attention and contact a NuvaRing® attorney (if you’ve experienced any losses).
