NuvaRing®, the popular new contraceptive, is linked to a greater risk of a myocardial infarction compared to birth control methods such as the Pill. "Myocardial infarction" is the medical term for a heart attack, an unexpected, life-threatening complication.
"Myo" means "muscle," and "cardial" refers to the heart. An infarction is the death of tissue in the body due to inadequate blood flow to the tissue. The inadequate blood flow can be caused by a clot blocking the blood's ability to travel freely through a vessel. If a blood clot blocks the flow of blood into the heart, a heart attack can be the result.
NuvaRing® works by providing low doses of two hormones that prevent the production of mature eggs from a woman's ovaries. However, these hormones may also increase the risk of NuvaRing® blood clots.
A myocardial infarction can cause a woman permanent heart damage and disability; it can also be fatal. NuvaRing® users who are at the greatest risk are those who are over 35, who smoke, or have a history of cardiovascular disease.
The symptoms of a myocardial infarction in a woman may be different than the "classic" symptoms known in men. A woman using a NuvaRing® should be aware of the following signs and symptoms of myocardial infarction:
