Although more than 50 NuvaRing® lawsuits have been initiated against the makers of this vaginal ring contraceptive, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not acted to ban the NuvaRing® or even require stricter warnings about its potential side effects, which include:

An Example NuvaRing® Lawsuit

A NuvaRing® lawsuit is an action taken to obtain a legal remedy for damages due to the use of this controversial contraceptive. For example, in December 2007, Jackie Bozicev, a 32-year-old wife and mother of two toddlers, died when a blood clot that had formed in a pelvic vein traveled to her lungs and caused a severe blockage.

Deep Vein Thrombosis, Seizure and Death

Bozicev had been using the NuvaRing® as prescribed by her OB/GYN doctor in May 2007. Before she died, she suffered a seizure in front of her husband and children, and was taken by ambulance to a medical center in Toms River, New Jersey. She was pronounced dead in the ER, of massive pulmonary thromboembolisms from a deep vein thrombosis, one of NuvaRing's side effects.

Against Several Defendants

A NuvaRing® lawsuit was brought by her husband, Robert Bozicev, in the Superior Court of New Jersey in Essex County. His attorneys allege that the defendants (Organon USA, Inc., the makers of the NuvaRing, plus several more parties):

• Knew that the NuvaRing® is dangerous, but concealed the dangers from the public, physicians, pharmacists and the FDA
• Failed to provide adequate warnings about serious NuvaRing® side effects

The NuvaRing® is a third-generation contraceptive that contains an ingredient (etonogestrel) that may be the root cause of the increased risk of blood clots.
