The vaginal-ring contraceptive known as NuvaRing® has an increased risk of heart attack compared to older oral contraceptives such as the Pill. A heart attack ("myocardial infarction") can be caused by a stroke, a medical event that is also a potential side effect of NuvaRing®.
A NuvaRing® delivers two hormones to the body of the woman who is wearing it — etonogestrel and estrogen. The etonogestrel is associated with a doubled risk of stroke. Most NuvaRing® strokes occur because of a blood clot forming in a blood vessel. If the clot travels to the heart, it can easily block the flow of blood to the heart, producing a heart attack.
The interrupted blood flow can damage or even destroy the muscle tissue in the heart. This is the "infarction," or death of tissue. "Myocardial" refers to heart muscle. A NuvaRing® myocardial infarction, or heart attack, can certainly be fatal; it can also cause a survivor permanent damage and disability. These are terrible outcomes for a woman who was simply using a contraceptive.
The risk of a NuvaRing® heart attack is even greater if the woman using the NuvaRing® has one or more of the following risk factors:
