The vaginal ring contraceptive known as NuvaRing has the potential side effect of inducing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A thrombosis is a blood clot, and the two hormones delivered to the body by the NuvaRing birth control method double the risk of clot formation compared to earlier-generation oral contraceptives.

Nuvaring Deep Vein Thrombosis Can Be Fatal

A thrombosis/blood clot can form in a "deep" vein (one that is not close to the surface of the body). Such deep vein clots usually, but not always, form in one of the legs. Although deep vein thrombosis can also go unnoticed and the clot can disappear on its own, it can also be very dangerous. Deep vein thrombosis becomes dangerous when the clot breaks loose and goes through the bloodstream to the lungs or the heart . In fact, about half of the time, there are no noticeable symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, but the outcome of such "silent" deep vein thrombosis can still be life-threatening.

Symptoms of Nuvaring Deep Vein Thrombosis

If you use (or have used) a NuvaRing, you should be aware of the symptoms of deep vein thrombosis:

• swelling in the affected leg, ankle or foot
• pain in one or more of these areas; in some cases, the pain starts in the calf and can feel like a cramp (a "charley horse")
• redness, warmth at the affected area
• pain or swelling in the neck or arm (deep vein thrombosis can occur in these body parts too)

Warning Signs of Nuvaring Deep Vein Thrombosis

It seems counter-intuitive, but sometimes the first sign of a thrombosis is the chest pain that is associated with a Nuvaring pulmonary (lung) embolism — when a blood clot travels to the lung. Immediate medical attention is appropriate when any of the following signs are experienced:

• a sudden, unexplained onset of shortness of breath
• discomfort or pain in the chest (especially if it feels worse when you take a deep breath or cough)
• a feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness, or fainting
• coughing up blood
• an unexplained sense of anxiety or doom
