The vaginal ring contraceptive known as NuvaRing® has the potential side effect of inducing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A thrombosis is a blood clot, and the two hormones delivered to the body by the NuvaRing® birth control method double the risk of clot formation compared to earlier-generation oral contraceptives.
A thrombosis/blood clot can form in a "deep" vein (one that is not close to the surface of the body). Such deep vein clots usually, but not always, form in one of the legs. Although deep vein thrombosis can also go unnoticed and the clot can disappear on its own, it can also be very dangerous. Deep vein thrombosis becomes dangerous when the clot breaks loose and goes through the bloodstream to the lungs or the heart . In fact, about half of the time, there are no noticeable symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, but the outcome of such "silent" deep vein thrombosis can still be life-threatening.
