The NuvaRing, a flexible ring that is inserted into a woman’s vagina, slowly releases hormones into the body in an effort to prevent pregnancy. Just like other forms of contraceptives, the NuvaRing® has been known to help women regulate their periods. While women are not supposed to experience bleeding, at all, while the NuvaRing® is in, some women do experience breakthrough bleeding, a side effect of the hormonal vaginal ring.
NuvaRing® breakthrough bleeding refers to light spotting that may occur during the time the NuvaRing® is inserted. The NuvaRing® is designed to be inserted and left inside the vagina for three weeks at a time. The ring is then removed and left out for a week. A period is supposed to occur during the time in which the NuvaRing® is out of the vagina.
However, one of the most common NuvaRing® side effects is breakthrough bleeding while the NuvaRing® is still inserted. Breakthrough bleeding should occur as light spotting. If you experience heavy or excessive bleeding between periods, you should see your doctor for medical attention.
Some women will experience excessive bleeding after they discontinue use of the NuvaRing®. This typically occurs in women who naturally have irregular, excessive periods. When they stop using the NuvaRing, their bodies will most likely go back to what they were before use of a contraceptive.
Although many women are happy with the NuvaRing, it has been linked to serious side effects including blood clots. NuvaRing® blood clots, if not properly treated, can be fatal. If you are using the NuvaRing, it is important to watch out for blood clot symptoms.
If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention to prevent further health complications and death:
If you begin to experience any of the listed symptoms (or any other unusual symptoms) while using NuvaRing, you should visit your doctor immediately. Other serious NuvaRing® side effects that may also be deadly include heart attach, stroke, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.
