NuvaRing® is a birth control method used by millions of women in the U.S. It was approved for use by the FDA in 2001. NuvaRing® birth control is a flexible plastic ring that a woman inserts into her vagina, where it releases a continuous dose of two hormones — an estrogen and a progestin — that prevents the ovaries from producing mature eggs that could become impregnated.
The NuvaRing® is left in place for three weeks out of every four weeks. At the end of the third week, the wearer removes it, and when the fourth week ends, the wearer inserts a new NuvaRing. The effectiveness of the NuvaRing® as a contraceptive covers all four weeks, and like the pill, is 99 percent effective, when used correctly.
NuvaRing® has a snappy TV commercial featuring women clad in yellow swimsuits; the spot stresses how wearing a NuvaRing® is much more convenient than having to take a contraceptive pill each and every day (as the ladies sing…"Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Everyday…Again!"). This smart marketing has encouraged millions of women to test it out.
Each monthly NuvaRing® costs from $35 to $50, after an initial medical examination.
The official NuvaRing® website published by the contraceptive's manufacturer, Organon, the most common NuvaRing® side effects are said to be vaginal infections, nausea and weight gain, and about 2 percent of the women who tried NuvaRing® quit because of side effects.
