The U.S. Food and Drug Administration acknowledged the link between nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) and MRI dyes in 2006 and in 2007 requested that the makers of gadolinium-based MRI dyes add a warning to their products. However, the warning was too late for those who developed NSF, an extremely rare disease that can have potentially life threatening complications.
Gadolinium Linked to NSF
MRI is a relatively recent technology used for looking inside the human body. Unfortunately, the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents for MRI has resulted in cases of NSF, primarily in patients with impaired kidney function.
Gadolinium is a toxin that does not occur naturally in the human body. If a patient's kidneys cannot adequately flush out gadolinium-based dye from the body, NSF may develop.
Gadolinium-Based Dyes
The following MRI dyes may cause NSF in patients with severe kidney insufficiency:
If you have been injected with any of these MRI dyes and have experienced symptoms such as tightening or hardening of the skin, itching or burning of the skin, joint stiffness, or any other unusual symptoms, you should consult with a physician. The onset of NSF can be anywhere from two days to 18 months after an MRI procedure that used a gadolinium-based contrast agent. There is currently no known cure for the disease, though measures can be taken to alleviate some of the symptoms.
Speak to an Attorney about NSF and MRI
Individuals who have developed NSF after an MRI may be entitled to compensation for damages caused by the disease, including medical costs, pain and suffering, mental anguish, and more. If NSF has been diagnosed in your family, you need to know your legal rights.
