Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a disease that was first noted in 1997, and its relatively recent appearance suggested that its cause was also of recent origin. Scientists and physicians suspected that NSF was caused by to a newly developed medication, device, or exposure to a toxin.
Disease Linked to Gadolinium
Indeed, it was eventually found that NSF disease is due to the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) in MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), usually in patients with impaired kidney function.
Gadolinium is a heavy metal ion. It is not normally present in the human body. When gadolinium is used in a contrast agent for MRI, it has been specially treated and the kidneys work to flush it out of the body. But if the kidneys are not functioning adequately, the gadolinium may remain in the body for prolonged periods, causing serious health effects like NSF.
NSF Disease Affects the Entire Body
Because an early symptom of the disease is skin fibrosis, NSF disease was originally thought to affect mostly the skin and was consequently called nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD).
However, it was eventually seen that the gadolinium-induced disease process also affects internal organs, and the name of the disease was changed to include “systemic,” which means it affects multiple body systems. NSF disease can manifest itself within days, weeks, or months after a gadolinium-based MRI dye has been administered.
