Nexium® is an over-the-counter as well as a prescription heartburn medication in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These drugs work by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. They are the most powerful inhibitors of acid production available today.
Studies have found that the older patients are, the more prescription drug they take in a day, and the longer they take them, the greater their chances of having bone fractures.
Proton pump inhibitors are useful for controlling gastric esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and treating ulcers of the stomach and small intestine. But recent studies have found a connection between taking PPIs and fractures of the:
Fractures of the spine, as well as the hip, can have devastating consequences. They drastically affect someone’s ability to get around and daily life. In some cases, the end result of these fractures can be death.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed the results of seven studies of the relationship between taking PPIs and fractures of the spine, hip, and wrist. A total of hundreds of thousands of patients were involved in the studies.
On May 25, 2010, the FDA published their conclusions. As a result of their review, the federal agency is revising the labels of both over-the-counter and prescription medicine to carry a warning about the risk of these bone fractures. This includes a warning on the label of Nexium®, produced by AstraZeneca.
The FDA published additional information for consumers and patients using PPIs. Among its warnings, the FDA said:
If you or someone you love has taken Nexium® and subsequently fractured a wrist, spine or hip, you should contact a Nexium® attorney. Our attorneys will treat you as an individual and be understanding of the difficulty of your circumstances. At the same time, they will aggressively pursue a just outcome for the pain, suffering and expense you have endured.
