Who Needs A Nexium® Lawyer?

Anyone who has taken the heartburn drug Nexium® and suffered from the following fractures should contact a Nexium® lawyer. Fractures being seen in patients taking Nexium® are of the

  • Wrist
  • Hip
  • Spine

Nexium®, both over-the-counter and prescription forms, are in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They reduce the production of stomach acid made by proton pumps, or acid-producing cells in the stomach. PPIs are taken by patients with gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD) — or heartburn, erosive esophagitis, and ulcers of the stomach and small intestine.

In May 2010 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) distributed a warning about hip, spine and wrist fractures in Nexium® users. The FDA had reviewed several epidemiological studies that showed an increased risk of the fractures.

A bone fracture study was conducted by researchers at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy and published in a May issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. The research studied postmenopausal women taking the following proton pump inhibitors:

  • Nexium®, made by AstraZeneca
  • Prevacid®, made by Takeda Pharmaceutical
  • Protonix®, made by Pfizer

Most of those suffering fractures were taking high doses of the medications or had been taking them for a year or more.

In a study of 161,806 postmenopausal women from 50 to 79 years old, the data showed that those taking the medications had a 25 percent increased risk of suffering a bone fracture over an eight-year period compared to women who did not take the drugs.

How a Lawyer Can Help

So, if you have been taking Nexium® and have suffered from any of these fractures, you should contact an attorney lawyer. A Nexium® attorney is familiar with the specific injuries associated with the heartburn medication and will be able to aggressively defend your rights.

Another article in the same issue of the journal reported a greater risk of bacterial infection among patients taking proton pump inhibitors. The drug labels carry warnings that the reduction in stomach acid might permit bacteria to grow and increase the chances of infection.

Nexium® Injuries and Lawsuits

Patients taking Nexium® who have had fractures of the hip, spine or wrist are suing the manufacturer, AstraZeneca for their injuries. If you have taken this medication, or another type of PPI, and then suffered a fracture of the hip, spine or wrist, you may be eligible to seek compensation for your injury and suffering.
About 119 million prescriptions were written for proton pump inhibitors last year. The manufacturers make about $14 billion in sales annually from these drugs.
