Nexium® is a prescription drug used to treat heartburn caused by acid reflux disease.
Nexium®, which should be taken one hour before a meal usually relieves symptoms immediately for 24 hours. Patients whose esophagus is damaged by continuous acid reflux should heal in four to eight weeks.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released a safety announcement regarding Nexium® and its over-the-counter equivalents. After reviewing the results of seven epidemiological studies, the FDA cautioned there might be an increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine in patients using proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium®.
The increased risk of fractures was seen primarily in patients 50 years of age and older. These patients constituted the majority of the people in the studies. The FDA announcement said it is not known exactly how the proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium® might cause fractures and that the dosage and duration of use of Nexium® and other such drugs might play a role.
Physicians were cautioned to closely monitor patients at increased risk of bone fractures
Although these findings were seen in epidemiological studies, the results of clinical trials conducted thus far have not shown such an increased risk of fracture. The FDA plans to follow up with long-term controlled clinical studies of women taking medications to control bone fractures who were or were not using Nexium® and similar compounds.
