A new study has revealed Zyprexa schizophrenia drug may not be a much more effective treatment than older and cheaper medications. These Zyprexa findings are surprising to many, especially since Zyprexa maker Eli Lilly & co. paid for the study. The Zyprexa study was conducted for a year at 17 veterans hospitals by testing Zyprexa against the drug combination haloperidol and benztropine.
The study found Zyprexa patients had an additional $3,000 to $9,000 more in yearly expenses because of the higher cost Zyprexa carries and increased hospital stays, in addition Zyprexa caused substantial weight gain. The study’s lead author and director of the Veterans Affairs Department’s Northeast Program Evaluation Center thinks that both doctors and patients must weigh these disadvantages and avoid assuming Zyprexa will be more effective than alternative, older schizophrenia treatments.
The Zyprexa results were very disappointing to many doctors that had believed up to the study findings that Zyprexa was a superior drug.
