Eli Lilly and Co. has responded to the loss of revenue from its once blockbuster selling antidepressant drug Prozac by issuing a companywide hiring freeze and other "strict measures". Lilly is trying to overcome the over $2 billion a year loss in revenue from Prozac. Zyprexa, an antipsychotic drug, has become its new best selling drug but as competition is taking away some of its market share, Lilly sent the notice on August 20th that the new imposed measures were immediately effective.
Zyprexa generated $4.3 billion in sales in 2003, but has come under heavy public scrutiny. The target of Zyprexa lawsuits, the drug has been accused of causing serious and potentially deadly side effects, including hyperglycemia, diabetes, pancreatic and other severe complications. The FDA required Zyprexa''s maker, as well as other atypical antipsychotic drugs, to include a warning of the complications. Zyprexa has been the source of lawsuits for side effects when treating indications it was approved for and for "off label" uses as well.
