"High-profile lawyer to sue the city for wrongful death"

The family of a 17-year-old mauling victim at the San Francisco Zoo has hired a high-profile lawyer to sue the city for wrongful death.

Fatal Mauling
“These parents are through an awful lot. There is nothing worse than losing a child. The family needs to be compensated for their horrendous loss, but they’ve said to me several times already that they want to make sure that no other family has to go through something like this,” said Michael Cardoza, the family’s attorney.

Carlos Sousa, Jr. died on Christmas day after being attacked by a tiger that had escaped from its enclosure. Sousa was with two friends, both of whom survived the attack.

Continued Safety Issues
Since the attack, the zoo has had to deal with additional safety issues. Last week a snow leopard chewed through a temporary enclosure and the week before that a polar bear almost climbed out of her enclosure.

High-Profile Attorney
Cardoza successfully represented Sharon Smith in 2001 for the wrongful death of Diane Whipple, her domestic partner. Whipple was mauled to death in the hallway of her apartment by her neighbor’s two Presa Canarios.
