"Zinc containing nasal sprays found the target of lawsuits"
The Quigley Corp. has become the latest target of allegations claiming its Cold-Eeze nasal spray has resulted in anosmia, the lost sense of smell. Similar lawsuits over the past year have also been filed against Matrixx Initiatives Inc., the maker of Zicam Cold Remedy.
An FDA spokeswoman said the agency had been investigating complaints from people who had used Cold-Eeze or Zicam. Cold-Eeze nasal spray was discontinued in September after just one year on the market because of what Quigley claims was due to poor sales.
Both Cold-Eeze and Zicam contain zinc, which lawsuits claim are toxic and can result in the partial or full loss of the sense of smell. Quigley Corp. says it considers the anosmia lawsuits frivolous.
