A jury found drug giant Wyeth responsible for the breast cancer of three women and ordered the company to pay $134.5 million in damages. The verdict is the largest against Wyeth in cases stemming from its hormone replacement therapy drugs.
Wyeth is currently facing about 5,300 lawsuits over Prempro and Premarin, drugs used to offset the symptoms of menopause. The drugs have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, among other health problems.
After two days of deliberation, a Nevada jury awarded Jeraldine Scofield and Arlene Rowatt each $43.5 million and Pamela Forrester $47.5 million for past and future damages. The three women had all taken one of Wyeth's HRT drugs and developed breast cancer.
A fourth woman who was part of the lawsuit died earlier this year. She had reached a settlement with the company last October. The terms of that settlement were not disclosed.
The jury is expected to make a decision about punitive damages today.
Prempro, Premarin and several other HRT drugs made by other pharmaceutical companies are still on the U.S. market.
