"131 Worst Nursing Homes"

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently released a list of the nation’s 131 worst nursing homes in response to pressure from Democratic lawmakers to make the names of poor ranking facilities public.

In November, the government released the names of 54 low-ranking nursing homes but balked at the idea of releasing the full list of facilities designated as “special focus.” Such facilities are seen as troubled and requiring more oversight.

“We believe that Americans should have access to as much information about a nursing home as possible,” said Sen. Herb Kohl, who applauded the disclosure.

Improving the Quality of Care

Taxpayers spend more than $70 billion a year in nursing home subsidies. There are over 16,000 nursing homes in the United States, most of which have some deficiencies. The nursing homes on the CMS list have about twice as many deficiencies as the average home.

“This is that latest in a series of steps we will be taking to improve quality and oversight in nursing homes. We are issuing more information on special focus facilities to better equip beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to make informed decisions and stimulate robust improvements in nursing homes having not improved their quality of care,” said Kerry Weems, acting administration of the CMS.
