A recent study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the number of U.S. workers killed in pick up truck accidents nearly doubled in the decade between 1992 and 2002. Contrary to findings that show work-related car accidents on the decline, a total of 210 workers died in pick up accidents in 2001, a 96 percent increase from 1992 statistics.
Experts partially credit the rise in popularity of vehicles for the increased number of deaths, citing more pick up truck options and increased usage among workers in rural parts of the country. Still, the CDC''s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports that far more workers were killed in accidents involving semi-trucks, cars and sport-utility vehicles than in pick up trucks during the same time period.
In general, motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of on-the-job deaths in the United States. The CDC urges that the number of deaths can be reduced though proper seat belt usage.
