"Workers Die in Water Plant Accident"

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation Plant in Stickney, Illinois was the site of two fatalities yesterday, when two as-yet unidentified subcontractors were killed in an industrial accident. The victims' identities are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.

Trapped in a Hole

A spokeswoman for the plant confirmed that the accident occurred on the plant property. Yesterday afternoon at about 3 p.m., the Stickney Fire Department responded to an emergency call describing two men trapped in a hole. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office later confirmed the two deaths, and according to an unconfirmed report, at least one of the men had drowned.

Huge Reclamation Plant

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s Stickney water reclamation plant is the biggest wastewater treatment facility in the world. It serves nearly 2.4 million people living in central Chicago and 43 surrounding suburbs.

The plant's spokeswoman said that the two workers who were killed were subcontractors for Metropolitan Biosolids Management (MBM), the project manager for the plant. An MBM spokesman stated that the two workers were employed by Northwest General Contractors. An investigation into the circumstances and cause of the deaths is in progress.
