"Senate Committee Considering a Bill Requiring Drug Companies to Make Gifts Public"
Every year, pharmaceutical companies spend an estimated $5 billion pushing for doctors to prescribe their drug. This money is often used for expensive dinners and conference tables in exotic locations. According to a former Merck representative, he quit in 2000 after spending $55,000 to market Merck''s arthritis drug Vioxx.
The former Merck rep believes drug companies spend too much money on marketing drugs yet denied his wish to create a special program to supply Vioxx at reduced cost to a public hospital where arthritis and poverty are rampant. The Senate bill would require pharmaceutical companies to report gifts so the consumer is able to see what has been given to doctors. So far, comparable bills have been passed in Vermont, Maine, New Mexico, and Nevada.
