Merrow’s new charges include:
Although Merrow’s current charges are misdemeanors, the fact that he has already been charged with both felony and misdemeanor drug charges, make him eligible to face a life term in prison. According to reports, Merrow was convicted of drug-relate felonies in 1999, 2004 and 2005.
Vermont State Police Trooper William Deveneau, the arresting officer of the most recent incident, stated that he saw Merrow’s car on the side of the road, Sept. 20, with the engine running and lights on. He found Merrow sleeping when he approached the car, and woke him. According to Deveneau, Merrow claimed he was tired and stopped to get some rest before continuing on his drive to Hoosick Falls, New York.
Deveneau said he figured something was wrong when Merrow drove off into the wrong direction of Hoosick Falls. He stated that he followed Merrow and pulled him over after witnessing him swerving between lanes. Once he pulled him over, he found a bag of marijuana on the passenger seat.
Merrow refused to allow police to search his vehicle, but after they obtained a search warrant, they found multiple bags containing prescriptions drugs. Merrow is being help in Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield in lieu of $50,000 bail. He is facing 12 years in prison for his current criminal charges and up to life in prison if convicted as a habitual offender.
