NHL Players Association has settled with former Buffalo Sabres hockey star Rob Ray for $70,000 in back lockout stipends. No teams in the NHL played during the 2004-5 season due to a strike by the organization. As part of the strike, players were receiving between $5,000 and $10,000 a month in union payments. Ray did not receive any union benefits during the strike.
Ray’s suit alleges that the NHLPA illegally deemed him “retired” and ineligible for benefits during the yearlong strike. Rob Ray and his legal team contended successfully that Ray was not retired and had played during the 2003-4 season. The NHLPA had illegally filed retirement papers on Ray’s behalf.
Rob Ray was critical of the NHLPA’s activities and he suspects that the withholding of his union payments was the result of a personal grudge by Executive Director Bob Goodenow.
