Get Started:
Wooden train cars, buildings, and other parts of the popular "Thomas and Friends" line of toys are being recalled in the United States due to dangerously high levels of lead in the paint on the toys. If young children ingest the lead in the paint, they can become seriously ill. The recall, issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the toys' maker, RC2 Corp, covers 1.5 million toys.
Hotlines to Find Out More
There have been no reports of lead poisoning or injury due to these toys at this time, but the CPSC has warned that consumers who have purchased the toys should stop using them. Not all "Thomas and Friends" toys are part of the recall; the particular lot numbers and logos to look for are given on the recall hotlines for the CPSC: (800) 638-2772 and RC2 Corp.: (866) 725-4407.
The recalled toys were made in China. Several other recent health scares involving products imported from China have created some tension between the U.S. and China — examples are contaminated pet food and toothpaste.
Lead Poisoning Symptoms
Children can get lead poisoning from exposure to lead-based paint (including house paint and paint on furniture or toys), drinking water from old lead pipes, and a range of other products typically found in a home. The symptoms of lead poisoning are fatigue, irritability, loss of appetite, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, anemia, abdominal pain, constipation, difficulty sleeping, and coma. Lead poisoning can be fatal.
