"Artificial Butter Causes Lung Illness"

A Denver man is suing Kroger Company and two of its divisions, claiming that he developed a rare lung illness linked to the artificial butter flavoring in microwave popcorn.

“Popcorn Lung”
Wayne Watson was diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans, also known as “popcorn lung”—a condition previously only seen in popcorn factory workers exposed to high levels of the toxic flavor chemical diacetyl.

Numerous lawsuits have been filed by factory workers over damages caused by the chemical. Ten workers at a Jasper, Mo. plant had to be placed on lung transplant lists.

Two-Bag-A-Day Habit
Watson had a two-bag-a-day popcorn habit, and tests in his kitchen revealed levels of diacetyl similar to those which factory workers were exposed to.

“This is new, but not surprising,” said Watson’s attorney, Kenneth McClain. “Workers at the Jasper plant whose only job was to microwave popcorn in the quality control department got sick, so it’s not surprising that someone like Mr. Watson could be at risk.”

Watson’s suit was filed in U.S. District Court on Tuesday. He is seeking unspecified damages.
