A survey published this month in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that an increasing number of American parents are beginning to question the need for vaccines for their children, as well as the need to follow the recommended schedule for multiple shots administered between the ages of 3 months and 3 years.
"We found that a large number of both pediatricians and family physicians had experienced at least one parent vaccine refusal in the last year," said Dr. Gary Freed of the University of Michigan.
The survey of almost 1,500 doctors found that 93 percent of pediatricians and 60 percent of family practitioners had at least one parent refuse a vaccine for his or her child in the past year.
Parents are concerned about the presence in some vaccines of a mercury-based substance called thimerosal, which has been linked to the development of autism in children in past studies. This fear has been somewhat heightened by recent Food and Drug advisories that warn pregnant woman about the dangers of consuming tuna, a fish containing high levels of mercury.
Thimerosal has recently been removed from all childhood vaccines, but may still be present in the "flu shot," which many women receive in their second and third trimesters.
