Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is approved to relieve hot flashes, night
sweats and other menopausal symptoms. In addition to the risk of heart
attacks, stroke and breast cancer, women receiving combination HRT are at
double the risk of developing blood clots in their veins as well, according
to a major government study. Final results of the Women’s Health Initiative
(WHI) appears in the October 6 issue of the Journal of the American Medical
Association, confirming previous research on the therapy.
In July 2002, after risks for heart attack and breast cancer were
discovered, investigators ended up halting that segment of the WHI. The
latest announcement only adds to the fear and confusion millions of women
taking HRT already had about the therapy. A second study in the journal
found that a certain type of estrogen, conjugated equine estrogen, increased
rates of venous thrombosis. Venous thrombosis is a type of blood clot than
can travel up the body to the lungs and block an artery, causing potentially
deadly complications.
