On Sept. 11, a Knoxville, Tennessee jury convicted Eric McLean, 33 of reckless homicide for fatally shooting his wife Erin’s young lover, Sean Powell. The prosecution in his trial was seeking a first-degree murder conviction, which can carry a life sentence.
The shooting took place in 2007. Erin McLean and Powell had been having an affair for weeks at the time, and they were in the McLeans’ home the day of the shooting. Erin McLean, then 29, had apparently been flaunting her affair with 18-year-old Powell for weeks, and the two laughed at Eric as he called 911 in an effort to get Powell to leave.
Eric testified that when Powell moved to his car outside, waiting for Erin to join him, Eric walked up to him with a 30-caliber rifle to attempt to scare Powell into leaving; Powell grabbed the rifle’s barrel, McLean jerked backward and the rifle went off. Powell was killed on the spot.
McLean confessed to the police and spent 42 days in jail. His sentencing is scheduled for November 7; he is expected to receive probation. Erin McLean and the couple’s two sons, aged 12 and 9, disappeared months ago.
