"Experimental drug hopes to be the first effective TBI drug"
So far, any attempt for an effective traumatic brain injury (TBI) drug has failed. Pharmos said that its experimental drug dexanabinol, while only partially preventing cognitive problems in patients undergoing heart surgery in a midstage study, is hoping it will succeed in a larger, more important, phase III study expected to be completed before the end of the year.
The high-risk described phase III study is designed to determine if dexanabinol can protect accident victims at risk for traumatic brain injury. The phase III study involves more than 800 patients who are at risk of moderate to traumatic brain damage resulting from accidents. Dexanabinol is a drug synthesized from cannabinoid compounds – a chemical cousin of marijuana.
Some analysts believe the commercial market for a TBI drug is potentially more than $1 billion, but still, relatively very little is known about brain injuries. Depending on the results of the phase III study, it could lead to dexanabinol being filed with the FDA, which investors anxiously await.
