A group of physicians from Tennessee have recently taken a stand against the Ortho Evra patch by no longer prescribing it to their patients.
The patch has been controversial throughout the years and the doctors feel it's far too risky to continue prescribing this form of birth control.
The Cause of the Controversy
Ortho Evra is a once-a-week patch that releases hormones into the body and are absorbed in the bloodstream.
Many choose the patch as opposed to a pill that has to be ingested daily despite its known risks.
Ortho Evra Risks
The main risk associated with the patch is the fact that it causes a sudden increase of estrogen in the body, which puts users at a 60 percent greater chance of developing blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and of death.
Other risks associated with the drug are:
A recent study conducted by the American College of Gynecology found that there is a high risk for developing deep vein thrombosis in women using the patch.
Deep vein thrombosis is a severe blood clot that can break and travel through the blood stream and into the lungs, which can then cause a pulmonary embolism.
