A stem cell transplant program neglected to ensure its stem cells were in top condition and failed to inform patients about problems, according to lawsuits filed against the program.
Between 1998 and 1999, the program treated 40 patients using a new method designed to increase efficiency and save time.
The suits allege that nearly one-fourth of the patients treated suffered serious complications within 100 days of receiving their transplants. Complications included hemorrhaging, severe infections, and in many cases, the return of their cancer.
Furthermore, more than half of the patients died within two years of treatment. Officials report that the death rates of transplant patients are usually far lower.
Many of the problems with the stem cells weren''t discovered until years after the transplants, after one lab technician who was also a recipient learned of an expert''s confidential report of the problems and opened up to the public.
Surviving patients and the families of victims, seeking compensation for their losses and suffering, have filed personal injury lawsuits against the stem cell transplant program.
Currently, one lawsuit has reached an undisclosed settlement. Many of the others are being combined into one case and will go to trial in March.
