Thousands of South Korean patients applied to take part in research with a worldwide stem cell center that hopes to cure diseases like paralysis and damaged spinal cords with its cloning technology. The more than 2,600 applicants are volunteering skin cells to help launch a global center that will grow embryonic stem cells for research.
The World Stem Cell Hub in Seoul, Korea hopes the research will one day lead to treatments for patients suffering with Parkinson’s disease or damaged spinal cords. Scientists caution they are way off from discovering treatments, but they hope to speed research on embryonic cells that can grow into all other tissues in the body.
Led by cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-suk, the hub opened Oct. 19 with the hopes of serving as the main center for providing scientists around the world with embryonic stem cells. A potential source of replacement tissue for people with a wide range of injuries and conditions, on the first day accepting applications from patients to participate in research, the center received 3,500 responses from patients through the Internet, telephone and fax or in person.
Though the center is open to foreigners, none applied.
